You can use any connector - I've used One S and original Xbox One connectors with no problem. The only issue is you have to get a bit creative with the drive caddy as you may be able to only get two screws in, but if it's your console and you're using an SSD I can't see it being an issue! Definitely worth a try before condemning the console.

I heard that if you swap it into the enclosure, the Xbox will just see it as an external storage drive. However, I cannot confirm that.
